International Profile
Indian golf courses have regularly hosted international golfing tournaments. The Delhi Golf Club was chosen to host the first ever golf competition for the Asian Games in 1982. The DLF Golf Club, the Aamby Valley Golf Club near Mumbai and the Delhi Golf Club have all hosted tournaments on the Asian PGA calendar.

The European tour recently included India as its 37th destination in February 2008 when the inaugural Indian Masters was played at the Delhi Golf Course. The $2.5 million event was the richest event held in the country and was won by India’s SSP Chowrasia. This tournament was rapidly followed up by The Johnnie Walker Classic at the Arnold Palmer designed DLF Golf Resort - another European Tour event. This undoubtedly represents a new era for golf in the country.

Jeev Milkha Singh, the pick of the Indian professional golfers, has made it a habit to win on the European Tour with his most recent one being The Bank Austria Open in June 2008. The other Indians with victories being Arjun Atwal and SSP Chowrasia.

“We all know how many Indian Golfers are coming onto the scene now and they’re breaking into the top 100 in the world, so it’s a great time to have a couple of tournaments here. The golf courses are tough and it’s great for the exposure (of the game in India). It’s great for the European Tour and I think it’s very good to come out to new venues like this and to test the market out there”
