Golf in Scotland
Links golf in Scotland can be a spiritual experience. Scotland is not only the home of golf; it is the home of links golf, the original form of the game that had its beginnings on the links land of eastern Scotland. Golf has been nurtured for over five hundred years in Scotland. Today there are over 550 courses spanning six golf regions, including five of the current major championship courses of St Andrews, Carnoustie, Turnberry, Royal Troon and Muirfield. Apart from the major championship courses, there are a number of hidden gems dotted all across the country, set in the most spectacular of natural surroundings that at times you will forget it was golf that you had in mind.
Golf in Scotland is also very convenient as the clubs are clustered for the most part, often allowing you to select one or two locations as bases. On the west, Ayrshire Coast, you'll find Turnberry with the Ailsa and Kintyre Courses, Royal Troon, Western Gailes. On the east coast, St. Andrews is flush with seven courses of its own as part of the Links Trust, plus neighbouring Kingsbarns, Crail, and St. Andrews Bay with The Devlin and Torrance courses. Less than two hours south of St. Andrews you will find yet another assortment of clubs representing the essence of links golf. Gullane’s three courses, North Berwick, Dunbar, and Cragielaw are situated in succession along the coast east of Edinburgh, each with histories reaching back to the roots of the game.
